Kinder Morgan is one of the largest pipeline transporters and terminal operators in North America. The Kinder Morgan companies own an interest in or operate more than 37,000 miles of pipelines that transport primarily natural gas, crude oil, petroleum products and CO2, and approximately 165 terminals that store, transfer and handle products like gasoline and coal. The Kinder Morgan companies include Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P. (NYSE: KMP), Kinder Morgan Management, LLC (NYSE: KMR) and Knight Inc. Most of Kinder Morgan's assets reside at Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE: KMP), which is one of the largest publicly traded pipeline limited partnerships in America with an enterprise value of approximately $20 billion. KMP operates predominantly fee-based businesses and is the largest independent transporter of refined petroleum products in the United States, a major transporter and storage operator of natural gas, the largest transporter and marketer of CO2 for enhanced oil recovery projects in North America, the largest independent terminal operator in America and a significant transporter of crude oil and petroleum products from Alberta to British Columbia, Washington state and the midwestern United States.
Knight owns the general partner of KMP. In total, Knight is owned by a management buyout group (led by Mr. Kinder) and affiliates of Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, American International Group, Inc., and the Carlyle Group and Riverstone Holdings LLC. Mr. Kinder owns approximately 31 percent of Knight.
Kinder Morgan Management (NYSE: KMR) is a limited partner in and manages and controls the business and affairs of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (NYSE: KMP). KMR has no properties and its success is dependent upon its operation and management of KMP and KMP's resulting performance. Distributions to KMR shareholders, which are paid in the form of additional KMR shares, are based on the amount of the cash distributions paid to KMP unitholders.
