Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, Sempra Pipelines & Storage and ConocoPhillips have teamed up to build one of the largest natural gas pipelines ever constructed in North America. The 1,678-mile Rockies Express (REX) project will provide valuable infrastructure allowing producers in the Rocky Mountain region to realize full value for their commodity by giving them the ability to deliver natural gas to attractive markets in the Midwest and eastern parts of the country. REX will also help ensure reliable sources of affordable natural gas for consumers in those markets as well. The project is being anchored by long-term, firm transportation contracts with a number of shippers for virtually all of the 1.8 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of available capacity on REX.
The route of the pipeline originates at the Meeker Hub in Rio Blanco County, Colo. and extends to the Clarington Hub in eastern Ohio. Wherever possible, the pipeline route will parallel existing utility corridors, greatly reducing the need to purchase additional right-of-way and minimizing disruptions in new areas. The initial 136-mile segment of the pipeline from the Meeker Hub in Rio Blanco County, Colo., to the Wamsutter Hub in Sweetwater County Wyo., has been completed was approved for service in February 2006. Construction on the 191-mile portion from Wamsutter to the Cheyenne Hub in Weld County, Colo., began in July 2006 and was placed in service on February 14, 2007.
The 713-mile REX-West segment of the pipeline, which runs from the Cheyenne Hub to Audrain County, Mo., was authorized by FERC order issued April 19, 2007 and is projected to be in service by January 2008. On April 30, 2007 Rockies Express filed with FERC an application for authorization to construct the REX-East portion, which when approved by FERC, will extend the pipeline another 638 miles to the Clarington Hub in Monroe County, Ohio. The REX-East portion is expected to begin partial service on December 30, 2008, and full service in June 2009.
A westward extension of REX from Wamsutter to the Opal Hub in Lincoln County, Wyo., which will utilize capacity on the Overthrust Pipeline, owned by a subsidiary of Questar Corporation was also authorized by the FERC's order issued April 19, 2007. The extension, which is expected to be in service by January 2008, could eventually deliver up to 1.5 Bcf/d into REX.
