In August 2021, Kinder Morgan acquired Kinetrex Energy, expanding the company's portfolio of businesses that support its commitment to “delivering energy to improve lives and create a better world.” Since becoming part of Kinder Morgan, the Indianapolis-based Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) and Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) business has expanded the vertically integrated platform and its ability to help fleets, utilities, and industrial customers reduce emissions and advance their sustainability goals.
As we mark this milestone, we want to take a moment to celebrate the progress we have made, reflect on the projects and facilities that have defined our growth, and share our excitement for everything that lies ahead.
Where It All Started
Originally founded in 2013, Kinetrex had already established itself as a leading supplier of LNG in the Midwest. The company operated two LNG facilities in Indianapolis, Indiana, in total, capable of liquefying approximately 250,000 gallons of LNG per day and supported by 2 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of storage capacity. This provided a strong foundation for serving transportation, asphalt, agriculture, utility, and industrial customers throughout the region.
Kinder Morgan RNG grew its RNG portfolio, breaking ground on four new RNG facilities and expanding through strategic acquisitions that broadened both the scale and geographic reach of our renewable energy assets. The results of these efforts are tangible: every facility represents a landfill relationship, a community investment, and a meaningful expansion of renewable energy available to the customers we serve.
In July 2022, Kinder Morgan acquired an RNG facility in Arlington, Texas. The Arlington facility produces approximately 1.4 Bcf of pipeline-quality RNG annually.
The first of three Indiana projects to reach commercial operation, Twin Bridges RNG captures landfill gas and upgrades it into approximately 1.5 Bcf of pipeline-quality RNG annually.
The second Indiana plant to come online, Liberty RNG, added approximately 1.5 Bcf of annual RNG capacity to the portfolio. Craig Moore, Chief Commercial Officer of Kinder Morgan RNG, noted at the time of its launch that “demand for RNG continues to increase at an accelerating rate,” and Liberty’s addition was a direct response to that momentum.
Prairie View RNG completed the Indiana buildout, contributing approximately 0.8 Bcf of annual RNG capacity and further expanding Kinder Morgan RNG's production footprint. Together, the three new Indiana facilities added approximately 3.8 Bcf of annual RNG capacity.
Acquired as part of the North American Natural Resources (NANR) acquisition, the Autumn Hills facility came online as an RNG plant in March 2025. Converted from a landfill gas-to-electric and medium-Btu asset, the facility added approximately 0.8 Bcf of annual RNG production capacity.
With all six plants online, Kinder Morgan RNG now has approximately 7 Bcf of annual generation capacity. Combined with our two LNG facilities in Indianapolis, Kinder Morgan's Midwest LNG and RNG platforms are broader, deeper, and increasingly capable.
The facilities and capacity numbers matter - but what we are most proud of is the people behind them. From day one, our approach has been rooted in partnership. Our teams are committed to safely operating our facilities, continually optimizing plant performance, and delivering reliable solutions that help our customers achieve their energy and sustainability goals.
This turnkey, vertically integrated platform is what makes Kinder Morgan RNG a differentiated partner in the dynamic RNG space. Whether you are a fleet operator looking to reduce lifecycle emissions, or a corporation seeking to advance its sustainability goals, we help bridge the gap. Like our RNG portfolio, the renewable energy landscape has continued to evolve. From developments with the GHG Protocol and its guidance on Actions & Market Instruments to growing demand within the transportation, maritime, and international markets, these trends point to a strengthening foundation for RNG within sustainability strategies.
We also work alongside landfill owners and operators to design, develop, build, and operate RNG facilities, helping convert biogas into a lower-carbon energy resource while supporting methane emissions reduction. For a landfill owner looking to unlock the value of biogas, our team has the expertise and infrastructure access to help make it happen. If you’re an RNG developer, we also offer marketing capabilities designed to connect RNG supply with end-use customers.
Moving Forward
The past five years have demonstrated what is possible when development expertise, operational excellence, commercial capabilities, and infrastructure scale come together.
Thank you to our landfill partners, customers, and employees for helping make the past five years possible. We look forward to building what comes next.
