Greenhouse Gas Reduction Opportunities Working Group

The mission of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction Opportunities Working Group is to identify potential economic opportunities to reduce Kinder Morgan’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. Established in mid-2023, this group has seven subgroups focused on specific
areas to reduce Kinder Morgan’s GHG emissions.

Pipeline Integrity

Maintaining our pipelines’ integrity through in-line inspections

Doing business the right way, every day is paramount at Kinder Morgan. We invest millions of dollars each year on integrity management and maintenance programs to protect people and the environment. One of the primary integrity assessment methods we use to help prevent incidents are in-line inspections (ILI).

Methane Emissions

Our Commitment to Mitigating Methane Emissions

Kinder Morgan has approximately 70,000 miles of natural gas pipelines that transport about 40 percent of the natural gas consumed in the United States. We are committed to providing natural gas to customers in a safe, reliable and environmentally sound manner. Mitigating methane emissions is an important part of our business.

Protecting Plant Species

Protecting Threatened Plant Species in Texas

We take great care to minimize impacts on the environment where we work and operate. Our plans and procedures are designed to meet or exceed established standards that protect environmentally sensitive areas, such as water bodies, wetlands and endangered species habitats. This includes our efforts to help preserve and protect the Tobusch Fishhook Cactus by collecting these plants within the Gulf Coast Express Pipeline Project right-of-way and providing plants for biodiversity research.

Protecting Threatened Animal Species

The Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge was created in 1992 to conserve the nesting habitat for two endangered bird species, including the golden-cheeked warbler. With a donation from the Permian Highway Pipeline project (which included the purchase of that privately-held piece of land valued at $8.8 million), approximately 1,360 acres was added to the Refuge to create a total of approximately 17,000 acres of contiguous, unbroken warbler habitat that will be managed by the Refuge system. This addition to the Refuge was a direct result of the Permian Highway Pipeline project and demonstrates that economic development, job creation and other public benefits from the development of critical pipeline infrastructure can also come with substantial environmental improvements.

Indigenous Peoples

Respecting Indigenous Peoples and Communities

We engage with the communities where we do business, including Indigenous Peoples and their communities, who are very important to us. For decades, we have sought to build long-term relationships with Indigenous Peoples through meaningful engagement based on mutual respect.

Keeping Communities Safe

Many pipelines were initially built in rural, undeveloped and sparsely populated areas. As communities grow, there has been encroachment of new homes, buildings, and other structures on these formerly open areas, increasing the risk of external force damage to our underground pipelines. Industry groups and individual operators, like Kinder Morgan, work closely with community and government leaders to implement pipeline protection programs and raise awareness about how development can safely occur around our rights-of-way with proper coordination and consultation.

Commitment to Environmental Justice

Many of Kinder Morgan’s existing assets are located within environmental justice (EJ) communities, and many of our current and proposed projects are also in or near EJ communities. We have a dedicated group that focuses on environmental permitting and stakeholder outreach and they coordinate with project teams to develop appropriate outreach strategies and community engagement plans.

UPDATING OPERATIONS PRACTICES TO REDUCE EMISSIONS

In the ever-evolving landscape of environmental stewardship, Kinder Morgan is taking steps to reduce emissions. One clear opportunity to meaningfully reduce emissions is in the way we handle planned natural gas releases, particularly through pumpdowns and blowdowns.

Being the Change Through United Way

Annually, Kinder Morgan offices across the U.S. hold United Way campaigns to encourage employees to make contributions benefiting their local United Way. The Kinder Morgan Foundation matches 50% of each employee’s donation. In 2023 alone, Kinder Morgan and its employees donated over $200,000 for United Way chapters across the nation.
